SFA has directed Kee Wee Hup Kee Manufacture Pte Ltd to recall EGO Honey Dates after the detection of sulphur dioxide, an allergen, at levels exceeding the maximum limit stated in the Singapore Food Regulations. The allergen was not declared on the food packaging.

Excessive levels of sulphite in food could result in allergic reactions in individuals who are hypersensitive to sulphite. Symptoms include hives, itchiness, stomach ache, diarrhoea and vomiting. Food products containing ingredients that are known to cause hypersensitivity must be declared on food packaging labels to safeguard public health.

Consumers who have purchased the implicated products should not consume them. Consumers who feel unwell may wish to seek medical attention.

2023-05-31 13:13:32 Qing Ye Trading Pte Ltd was fined $5,000 by the Court today for illegally importing fresh produce for sale. Its director Kang Soon Poh was also fined $5,000 for failing to prevent the offence from being committed.

In Aug 2022, a truck carrying food produce consigned to Qing Ye Trading Pte Ltd was stopped and referred for checks at Woodlands Checkpoint. During a follow-up inspection, SFA found that the company illegally imported approximately 216kg of undeclared and under-declared fresh fruits and vegetables. All illegal consignments were seized.

In Singapore, food imports must meet SFA’s requirements. Fruits and vegetables can only be imported by licensed importers, and every consignment must be declared and accompanied with a valid import permit. Illegally imported vegetables are of unknown sources and can pose a food safety risk (e.g. if unregulated or high level of pesticides are used). The long-term ingestion of excessive pesticide residues through the consumption of vegetables that have been subjected to pesticide abuse could lead to adverse health effects.

More than six tonnes of illegal food imports seized

SFA seized about 6.8 tonnes of illegally imported food from Thailand and Myanmar. The raids were conducted between 11 to 13 May 2023 at multiple locations, including an industrial building at Mandai Link and food retail establishments in Textile Centre and Peninsular Plaza.

We found large quantities of processed and raw meat as well as insect products, including beef, duck, pork, chicken, mutton, pig’s blood, crickets and silkworms. All had been illegally imported from unapproved sources and without a valid licence.

SFA is following up with further investigations. Illegally imported food products of unknown sources pose a food safety risk. If you have information on suspected illegal activities, please provide feedback via our online feedback form (www.sfa.gov.sg/feedback) with details for our follow-up investigations. All information will be kept strictly confidential. For more: https://go.gov.sg/20230517sfaraid

2023-05-15 14:11:14 [𝗙OOD RECALL]

SFA’s continued market surveillance on infant food products has detected arsenic in the following infant products at levels exceeding the maximum limit stated in the Singapore Food Regulations:

a) Wen’s Baby Cereal Puree Whitebait and Pumpkin
b) Wen’s Baby Cereal Puree Whitebait and Purple Sweet Potato
c) Holle Organic Wholegrain Cereal Rice

SFA has directed Naoki Trading and Chadil Pte Ltd to recall the affected batches of the product.

Arsenic is a heavy metal found naturally in the earth’s crust and in the environment. Long term intake of arsenic can cause cancer and skin changes. Hence, exposure through food, especially those meant for young children, should be kept as low as possible. To minimise exposure to arsenic, consumers are advised to offer their infants a balanced diet with a wide variety of food. More information on arsenic can be found on SFA’s website: https://www.sfa.gov.sg/food-information/risk-at-a-glance/arsenic-in-rice-and-infant-rice-cereal.

Consumers who have purchased the implicated products are advised not to feed it to their children. Those whose children have consumed the implicated products and have concerns about their children’s health should seek medical advice. Consumers may contact their point of purchase for enquiries.

Pai Choi Siang, the owner of Kim Soon Seng Trading, a meat processing establishment, was fined $18,000 today for multiple hygiene-related offences.

On 31 March 2022, during inspections of their premises in Woodlands Loop, SFA officers detected several repeated hygiene lapses. These include the failure to keep the wall of the premises and the floor of the freezer in a clean and hygienic condition at all times, and the failure to use effective means to exclude vermin from entry and harbouring in the premises.

All food establishments should ensure that their premises are clean and well-maintained, as well as adhere to proper food hygiene and food safety requirements. SFA will take enforcement action against operators of meat processing establishments who do not adhere to regulations or comply with food hygiene and food safety requirements.
