Illegally imported food is a recipe for disaster, stick to the legal routes!

On 13 Apr, SFA officers raided an industrial building in Senoko and seized more than 2 tonnes of illegally imported food, alcohol, and medicines. We found large quantities of processed and raw meat and seafood, including frozen pork, beef, chicken, fish, and frog. All had been illegally imported from unapproved sources and without a valid licence, and kept in an illegal coldstore. We also found 470 bottles of alcohol, and an assortment of medicines.

SFA, Singapore Customs, and the Health Sciences Authority are following up with further investigations.

Illegally imported food products of unknown sources and illegal coldstores for meat and seafood pose a food safety risk. If you have information on such illegal activities, please provide feedback via our online feedback form (www.sfa.gov.sg/feedback) with details for our follow-up. All information will be kept strictly confidential.

Orca Marketing Pte Ltd and its director have been fined $15,000 and $13,000 respectively today for failure to arrange for SFA inspections, and selling imported food consignments prior to inspections.

In Jan and Jun 2021, the company imported consignments of chilled whole lamb carcase and beef tenderloin, which were sold before inspection, examination and certification by an authorised examiner. This is a requirement for all imported meat and fish products before sale, distribution or export.

2023-03-29 13:05:36 [Food Recall]

SFA has detected aflatoxin B1 and arsenic in samples of Eu Yan Sang’s Brown Rice Si Shen powder at levels exceeding the maximum limit stated in the Singapore Food Regulations.

SFA has directed the manufacturer, Eu Yan Sang (Singapore) Pte Ltd, to recall two affected batches of the product.

Arsenic is a heavy metal found naturally in the earth’s crust and in the environment. Aflatoxins can occur in foods due to fungal contamination before and after harvest under warm and humid conditions. Long term intake of aflatoxins can cause cancer and liver damage, while long term intake of arsenic can cause cancer and skin changes. Hence, exposure through food, especially those meant for young children, should be kept as low as possible.

More information on aflatoxins and arsenic can be found on SFA’s website: https://www.sfa.gov.sg/food-information/risk-at-a-glance/aflatoxins-and-food-safety and

Alliance Divine Impex Pte Ltd was fined $4,000 by the Court today for illegally operating an unlicensed cold store. During an inspection of its premises last July, SFA officers found that about 3,200kg of meat and seafood products were stored in a unit not licensed as a cold store.

In Singapore, all cold stores for meat and seafood products must be licensed and are required to meet SFA’s requirements and food safety standards.
