2023-06-10 11:14:11 After Orhan became the Bey the Ottomans, he started his campaign to annex the northwestern side of Anatolia. Therefore, he began the siege of the city of Nicaea in 1328 CE. By the Spring of 1329, the Ottomans had passed Nicomedia (İzmit).

Threatened by the Ottoman advance, the Byzantine emperor Andronikos III was compelled to lead an army against Orhan to relieve the cities. On the morning of the third day of his campaign, he reached Pelekanon, where he found Orhan encamped with his light-armed and irregular troops.

After a day of aimless engagements, the Byzantine emperor made the decision to retreat his army back to the camp at Pelekanon. While they were in the process of withdrawing, the Turks pursued their rear guard, and the emperor, while fending off their attack, sustained a wound in his thigh.

There was no capable leader in the Greek camp who could replace the emperor. Therefore, Andronikos, the emperor, chose to sail to Constantinople without attempting to restore the honour of his military. The Battle of Pelekanon was the first encounter between a Byzantine Emperor and an Ottoman Bey/Sultan.

Historian George Finlay writes, "Insignificant as it really was, its moral effect was incalculable; the heavy-armed and disciplined Greeks had fled before the light-armed and irregular Turks; and the spirit of the Greek emperor and of the Greek nation was broken."

2023-06-07 11:25:11 After the fall of Jerusalem, there was a mass slaughter of the Muslim and Jew population of the city perpetrated by the Christian Crusaders. The Fatimids were defending the city, who had previously captured it from the Seljuks in 1098.

Previously, in 1095, Pope Urban II called for a crusade in a speech during the Council of Clermont, France. As a result, the People’s Crusade led by Peter the Hermit and Walter left for the Holy Land. Made of a mob of peasant zealots, the people’s Crusade was crushed by Seljuk Sultan Kılıç Arslan I in the Battle of Civetot.

Then in April 1097, the Crusaders of the official First Crusade crossed the Bosporus into Anatolia. On 1 July 1097, the Crusaders defeated Sultan Kılıç Arslan I in the Battle of Dorylaeum and captured the Seljukid capital city of Nicaea.

From there, Crusaders moved to the Seljukid city of Antioch (present-day Antakya, Turkey) and captured it on 3 June 1098. On the other side, the County of Edessa was established by Baldwin I, who had separated himself from the main army of the Crusaders, which was heading south towards Antioch and Jerusalem.

Finally, the Crusaders reached Jerusalem in June 1099 and started besieging the city on the 7th day of the month.

2023-05-27 12:32:23 Ibn Khaldun is best known for his groundbreaking work in the field of historiography and social sciences. His most renowned work is the "Muqaddimah" (also known as the "Prolegomena" or "Introduction"), which serves as an introduction to his larger historical work, "Kitab al-'Ibar" (Book of Lessons).

In the "Muqaddimah," Ibn Khaldun laid the foundation for the philosophy of history and social sciences. He introduced several revolutionary concepts, including the idea of social cohesion and group solidarity (known as 'Asabiyyah), cyclical patterns of the rise and fall of civilizations, and the importance of economic factors in shaping societies.

Ibn Khaldun emphasized the role of geography, climate, and social organization in the development of societies and argued that the rise and decline of civilizations occur due to a combination of factors, including cultural, economic, and political changes. His work challenged the prevailing views of his time and continues to influence fields such as sociology, economics, and history.

Ibn Khaldun's work had a lasting impact on subsequent scholars and thinkers in both the Islamic world and the West. His ideas were later rediscovered during the European Renaissance, and his theories on the rise and fall of empires influenced thinkers such as Machiavelli.

Historian Arnold Toynbee described Ibn Khaldun’s theoretical treatise on history, the Muqaddimah, as ‘undoubtedly the greatest work of its kind that has ever been created by any mind in any time or place.’

The philosopher, sociologist, and anthropologist Ernest Gellner declared that Ibn Khaldun was ‘a superb inductive sociologist, a practitioner, long before the term was invented, of the method of ideal types.’
