. Ijithaad relating to Matters of Usool and Furoo'

Shaykh Uthaymeen rahimahullah
said: "Categorising the religion into usool and furoo' is an innovation, as has been proven by Shaykhul Islaam…for this reason, we say the basis of categorising the religion into usool and furoo' is not correct, nor is it known from the Book, Sunnah and the statements of the Sahaabah and Taab'een. However, we say - according to those who see this (categorisation) - that the person who is mistaken or correct (in their Ijtihaad) in matters of furoo' or usool then they are equal." And he rahimahullah said: "…even in the matters of furoo', if an individual fell short from striving to seek the truth and gives a religious verdict or islamic ruling, he will not be rewarded; because he did not fully strive to obtain the truth."

Also, Imaam adh-Dhahabi rahimahullah said: "Whoever is upon Ijtihaad from the believers while striving to seek the truth but they make a mistake, Allah subhanahu wa taa'laa will forgive his mistake for him no matter what it is, whether it be from the matters of Nadhariyyah (usool) or amaliyah (furoo'). This is what the companions of the Prophet ﷺ and the majority of the Imaams of Islaam were upon." [Al-Muqithah, page 158, print: an-Nahdah]
