The PLAXIS Barcelona Basic Model (PLAXIS BBM) is used to simulate the behaviour of unsaturated soils. It is based on Bishop’s effective stress and suction as stress variables, accounting for a smooth transition from a partially saturated state to a fully saturated condition and vice versa.
This session builds on last month’s Coffee Corner. It presents a model capable of reproducing an increase in strength with suction and collapse due to wetting, in addition to other typical characteristics of the unsaturated soil behaviour under different loading conditions.
