.The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) annual report for 2022 indicates a significant increase in reported cybercrime cases in India
Telangana, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra recorded the highest number of cybercrime cases(70%), while Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Goa recorded the highest cybercrime rates per lakh population.
"Cheating by impersonation using computer resources" was the most reported cybercrime, involving anyone impersonating someone through a communication device or computer resource.
Online impersonation was identified as one of the toughest crimes to investigate, with a low conviction rate.
The report shows a rise in the number of cybercrime cases from 52,974 in 2021 to 65,893 in 2022. As of the start of 2022, there were already 71,867 pending cybercrime cases.
The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and a toll-free helpline (1930) were established in 2019 to address the rising cybercrime issue.
